The hardest part of setting up a home office in a small room isn’t choosing a desk — it’s working out what will actually fit once a chair has to pull out behind it. This free calculator does that math for you. Enter the space you have, and it tells you the desk width and depth that will work, the desk type that suits your room, and which of our guides to read next. No email required.
Will It Fit? Small-Space Desk Calculator
Measure the clear space you can give a workspace, then enter it below.
How the math works: a comfortable small-space desk needs roughly 18" of depth for a laptop, 22" once you add a monitor, and about 26" for a dual-monitor setup. Behind that, a standard chair needs ~20" to pull out and sit (an armless or compact chair needs ~14"). So the depth a fixed desk really asks of a room is its own depth plus the chair clearance — which is why so many studios run out of depth long before they run out of width, and why a fold-down or folding desk is often the right answer. Width is simpler: leave an inch or two of breathing room, and don’t go below about 24" or the surface stops being usable.
Once you know your numbers, jump to the right guide: compact desks, folding desks, wall-mounted desks, or small-space chairs. For the full method behind our picks, see How We Test.
